Benefits of natural wax
The soft illumination helps us to unwind and even transform your mood, making them a perfect aid for any relaxation routine. However, when lighting traditional candles – you may be unknowingly releasing chemicals into your home, which could be causing potential harm for both you and the environment. Of course, when we are shopping for candles, the fragrance is what attracts us (as it should!) but the wax is equally important! We aim to be completely transparent as we feel it is so important when trying to better our planet, after all - knowledge is power! and this is so true when it comes to making thoughtful and informed choices. In order to make choices that are better for us and our planet, transparency is key!
But let’s go back to basics! You might be wondering well what is candle wax and why is it important? Candle wax is essentially your candle’s fuel. That is, when the candle is lit – the wax melts and that then evaporates which in turn releases the fragrance that is in your candle. There is plenty of choice when it comes to natural waxes (which we love!) but ours is still quite relatively new to the market so we felt it would be great and really informative to share more about our wax.
After months and months of deciding upon which wax to go for, we always had sustainability in mind, but we also knew that of course, the quality still had to match. So, we eventually settled on a beautiful blend of Rapeseed and Coconut wax and just as the name suggests, this wax is made of purely rapeseed oil and coconut oil, and nothing else! We love this wax because it’s completely free from paraffin, soy, palm, beeswax and any synthetic additives.
Rapeseed wax comes from the oil that is harvested from the plant (you will recognise these plants from the bright yellow flowered crops in the fields) and this is predominately farmed in the UK and Northern Europe. It is a sustainable, biodegradable and renewable material which has been developed to produce high-quality candles. There are no links to intensive farming, mass deforestation or GMO presence. In terms of fragrance, rapeseed wax has an amazing fragrance retention with a strong hot and cold throw, a slower burn rate and a low carbon footprint.
Coconut wax is also a great environmentally friendly option in comparison to paraffin, soy and other waxes. It offers a slow and luxurious burn with an excellent hot and cold throw. It is also completely organic and a more sustainable high-yield crop. The coconut wax used in our wax comes from smallholder farmers in the Philippines and Indonesia, and actually one third of the farmers and their families make their living from coconut production. The wonderful thing about coconut wax is that there is no forest removal in order to plant new coconut trees. In fact, our supplier has made us aware that there is a pioneering programme occurring where farmers are being trained upon sustainable coconut agricultural practices, which we are all for supporting!
Together, the combination of the rapeseed and coconut creates such a soft, creamy and luxurious wax with an excellent scent throw and a long burn time, at no cost to the environment. It also produces a clean burning candle that is safe in your home. We really think it’s a win-win!
Rapeseed and Coconut wax does not release any of these pollutants found in paraffin wax candles. Your safety and the well-being of our planet is paramount. So, you can be rest assured that our candles are committed to being fully vegan, sustainable and always 100% plant based.
A little tip for you as well.. once your candle is at the end of its life and there should be around 1cm of wax left at the bottom, don’t waste it! Instead, pop it in your wax burner. The easiest way to do this is to pop your candle in the freezer for a few hours or overnight. Then, use a knife and run it round the edge of your container which should break the wax free from the glass. You can then re-use this wax and enjoy it in your burner!
